Frequently asked questions

  • Via email or the online booking form (preferred). Alternatively you can phone 022 314 3032 and leave a message.

Referrals can be sent via Healthlink EDI or email, please see the Referrers page for more detail.

  • You can self-refer or have your health provider send a referral. Referrals are helpful if you have already had investigations done or have a complex medical history. If your health provider has sent a referral specifically for a procedure such as ring pessary fitting or IUD/implant insertion then an initial appointment is not always required.

  • This will depend on what service you require and an indication of price will be given before you book. Most new patient consultations require a 45-minute appointment. This allows time for Dr Zwart to listen to your story, perform any required examinations and tests, discuss management and arrange any follow up. If you require a contraceptive procedure then a pre-consult over the phone may be all that is needed. There is some limited funding for certain procedures (see below).

  • As a small private practice providing specialist GP care, there are significant differences in overheads compared to your registered GP practice. We do not receive any government funding for consultations. We also offer extended appointments that allow adequate time to hear your unique concerns and formulate a plan through a shared decision making approach.

  • There is government funding available for IUD insertion and removals, Implant insertion and removals, Pipelle biopsies and Pessary insertions. Criteria such as Community services card or financial hardship apply. A healthcare provider’s referral is helpful but not essential. Please discuss at time of booking if you wish to consider this option.

ACC funding is also available for Maternal Birth Injury and Pelvic Mesh Treatment Injury where applicable.

  • For new patients, initial appointments are 30-45 minutes long depending on complexity. This will include history taking, examination, ordering of any tests/imaging and possibly a prescription. Your consultation fee also covers administration costs, a review of your case and writing a letter to your GP. If you require a procedure this will be organised for a future appointment. You are welcome to bring a support person with you to your appointment.

  • If treatment has been initiated we offer a quick follow up phone call 3-4 weeks after your appointment to check in and then a follow up appointment is usually booked at the 3 month mark. Annual reviews are recommended thereafter to ensure the treatment remains appropriate and safe for your health needs.

  • Yes, if a virtual consult is required please let us know when your booking is being made and this can be accommodated.

  • The clinic is available to anyone living in NZ. If you reside outside of the Kāpiti/Horowhenua/Wellington region I may not be able to refer you to your local public hospital, but this can usually be facilitated by your own GP.

  • Appointments may be covered if you have GP cover as part of your policy. Some Southern Cross policies will also reimburse costs for insertion and removal of an IUD for symptoms of heavy or painful bleeding. It is advised you check with your insurance provider beforehand.

  • A follow up consultation is usually fine for ongoing care, unless we are dealing with a new complex issue. Dr Zwart does not provide general GP services and patients will remain registered with their usual GP clinic.

  • As per the Ministry of Health, prescriptions provided by private clinics are charged at $15 per item by the pharmacy. This fee is waived if the prescription is for contraception, provided as part of an ACC consult or a funded procedure.

  • Please allow as much time as possible if you need to change your booking. This allows us time to offer the appointment to another patient. If cancellations are made within 24 hours of your appointment time and a replacement can not be found there will be a charge of 50%. Not attending your appointment will also incur a charge of 50%. Appointments can also be done via phone or video if you can’t make your appointment in person.

  • Payment is to be made at the time of consultation unless prior arrangements have been made. This can be done via Eftpos/Credit card at the time of the appointment.
